Car Transmission System Maintenance: Servicing of Gear Box, Brakes etc

I) Basic Structure and Functioning of the Transmission System of a Car

The Gear Box of a car is the  main components of the car’s transmission system. Other components of the transmission system include – clutch, angle, axles, clutch pedal, brake pedal, gear lever etc.

a) Gear Box

The main role of the gear box (shown in picture above) is to transmit the rotational energy produced by the car engine to the car wheels which in turn rotate and make the car move. Hence this system is called the Car Transmission  System. The Gear Box controls the speed of the car. It is made up of gear wheels which are linked intelligently and can be manipulated to either increase or reduce the speed of the car.

The Gear box of a car is controlled using the Gear Level (shown in the image below). The lever usually has 4 to 10 gears depending on the type of car. The common gears are -  Neutral, Gear 1(gear1), Gear 2(gear2), Gear  3(gear3), Gear  4(gear4),  Gear (5),  and Reverse(R).

b) Clutch

The clutch is a device that is placed between the Car Engine and the gear box. The Clutch Pedal is used to control the clutch. The clutch allows the user to separate the engine from the gear box. In other words the clutch is used to prevent the engine rotational power from reaching the tyres of the car.
In other words, when the clutch pedal is pressed down, the car cannot move and remains stationary even when the Car Engine is switched on and running.

c) Foot Brakes and Hand Brakes

From the name, we can deduce their roles. The foot brakes is used to slow down the car when it is moving. While the hand brakes is activated when the car is parked and is  stationary to avoid the car from sliding or rolling. Each time you park a car, you need to pull up the hand brakes.

II) Maintenance (Servicing)  of  the Car Transmission System

You must service the transmission of car to ensure the car moves smoothly. In addition, the transmission system is a very sensitive of  car. This is due to the fact the a littler fault in any component of this system can lead to fatal accidents.

For example, if the Brakes of a car faulty, the car is likely to end up in a valley or gutter after tumbling several times. This can result is huge human losses. Please always double check and follow carefully the servicing tasks defined by the manufacturer.

The main Maintenance Operations of the Car Transmission System include:

1) Always clean and inspect all the components of the Transmission System so that any problems can be identified as early as possible and catastrophes can be avoided.

2) Grease  all the grease nipples of the moving parts in the transmission system.

3) Maintain the correct and acceptable Transmission Oil levels.

4) Continue to monitor free play or movement  brakes
within the limit indicated in your car's user's manual

- Make sure the foot brakes pedal releases
- Make sure the clutch pedal releases

5) Follow the recommended intervals for changing transmission oil filter specified in the car's operation manual.
