Routine Maintenance Operations of the Electrical System of a Car – Car Electrical System Routine Servicing

Car Electrical System Maintenance or Servicing entails following the car manufacturers manual which specifies explicit tasks the user should execute at well defined time intervals. We are going to look at the common  car electrical system servicing tasks to do after every 250 hours or approximately every 10 days

This knowledge will help you diagnose simple faults in your car which can be life saving if your car breaks down when you are alone in a very remote area. In addition, reading and understanding this article will  reduce the cost of running and maintaining your car.

Warning!!!  Never try to service the electrical system of your car on your own if you are not a well qualified technician (or electrical engineer or technician). This article will help you figure out what can be wrong with your car’s electrical system and to know exactly what the technician is talking about and avoid technicians from exploiting you due to your ignorance.

The most common operations to carry out on your car’s electrical system every 250 hours (or 10 days) include:

1) Verify the level of electrolyte (electrolyte contains Sulphuric acid so be careful) in your battery

If the level is very low, refill it with distilled water. The least value of electrolyte is given in your car’s user’s manual.

2) Verify carefully the charge of the battery

This is usually done with a hydrometer or any other well known device.

3) Make sure the positive and negative connection cables of the battery are well fixed to the car battery.

4) Verify the Tension   of the alternator belt

The alternator recharges the car battery when the car is moving by converting the mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Caution:     The car battery electrolyte contains Sulphuric Acid. This acid is very dangerous: it can burn your skin badly or tear off your clothes. So be very careful when working with the car battery and if the acid spills on you, rinse the area very quickly and seek the help of a doctor. Always keep the battery very far from fire and sparks to avoid explosions.
